Printronix P7000HD Printer FAQ

Does the Printronix P7000HD printer share all the same great benefits of a Printronix P7000?
Yes. The P7000HD is a full family member of the 6th generation P7000 line matrix family. It supports all the industry leading solutions such as Integrated Print Management for precise print quality control, PrintNet Enterprise for remote management capability, high reliability, ease of use, simplicity of repair, low operating cost, and a wide range of paper handling options.

What are the intended applications for the Printronix P7000HD Printer?
This printer is designed for the same core applications line matrix is most commonly used in today; reports, transportation documentation, manufacturing documentation and multi-part forms. The key difference is that the systems that drive the printing of these forms are increasingly moving towards Windows based architecture. This simplifies the system development and greatly expands the flexibility of output designs. The P7000HD is optimized for Windows based printing, so it can drop straight into these new system environments without requiring any special application modification or restrictions.

Does the Printronix P7000HD printer open any doors to new applications?
Yes. Because it works with Windows without any restrictions, it is ready to drop in and replace virtually any laser printer in applications that can benefit from higher reliability and lower operating costs.

Can the Printronix P7000HD printer handle all the fine details and small point sizes?
Yes. As pointed out above, as systems migrate to Windows, they are greatly expanding the complexity of the form design. Outputs now typically include very small point sized fonts for notes, terms, and conditions. They also use TrueType™ fonts with proportional spacing and more intricately designed character shapes. The Printronix P7000HD is so high in resolution, that it can precisely handle all these details and produce the form exactly as designed. As an example, characters sizes down to six point are no problem for the Printronix P7000HD.

Can the Printronix P7000HD print PDF files?
Yes. This, in fact, is the most common application for this printer. PDF’s are very popular in business imaging, because the PDF image offers a good measure of document control. The Printronix P7000HD has sufficient resolution to accurately duplicate all the fine print and details of the original PDF image.

Do I need to modify my application to work with a Printronix P7000HD printer?
No. The modern paradigm is for the host application to generate images completely independent from the target printer. As such, most new applications do not actually generate specific control codes for any individual printer. Instead, they focus all their communication through a driver. This communication with the driver is highly standardized and all printer manufactures must conform to this standard interface. This allows many different printers to drop in place of one anther without requiring printer specific changes. All that is needed is the manufacturer’s driver to bridge the interface from the system to the printer.

Does this mean the Printronix P7000HD supports PCL or Postscript?
No and these languages are not necessary. Although these are popular laser printer languages, the real system communication is with the driver. The driver then speaks the native language of the printer. For laser printers this is most often PCL or PS, but for a Printronix P7000HD it is a variation of Epson LQ. The bottom line is that the printer manufacturer must provide a driver for their printer. How this driver talks to the printer is of no interest to the host system.

How do I know the HD driver will work with my application?
All the Printronix P7000HD drivers are certified by Microsoft for compliance. This gives you the assurance that the image will print as originally intended.

Can I use a Printronix P7000HD as a traditional text only line printer?
It is not best suited for this purpose. The Printronix P7000HD does not support common line printer languages such as P-Series, ProPrinter, or Epson, so it is only really capable of pure unformatted text printing. This type of printing will always be faster when printed on a standard Printronix P7000 that is optimized for this purpose.

Can a Printronix P7000HD handle my demanding forms?
Yes. The Printronix P7000HD shares all the same powerful drive, straight paper path, and stacking capabilities as a standard Printronix P7000. The only significant difference is that the high definition printing is not suitable for more than four copies of multipart printing.

What ribbon does a Printronix P7000HD require?
The Printronix P7000HD uses the Ultra Capacity HD ribbon. This special High Definition formulation of Ultra Capacity ribbon was developed to handle the unique challenges of high detail fine point printing. Like the standard Ultra Capacity ribbon, this new formulation delivers a sharper darker image and extra long life.

Is the Printronix P7000HD printer difficult to setup?
Actually, it is very simple to setup and is generally even easier than a standard Printronix P7000 installation. Since the driver controls virtually every aspect of the form and printing parameters, the only real setup is typically the configuration of the connection port used to print from.
