RFID Technology Overview |
The 'Next Generation' of
RFID Support
Version 8.4 of the Loftware Print Server RFID technology
reflects the lessons learned during our 04' and 05' pilot
programs with our customers. A major new innovation is the
ability to drive RFID readers. One system can now drive your
network of barcode and ‘Smart Label’ printers while also
providing the necessary tools for building robust reader
applications.
Loftware follows the standards set forth by EPCglobal,
which is a joint venture between EAN International and the
Uniform Code Council (UCC). They create the global standards
which are necessary for tracking goods through the supply
chain using RFID tags as opposed to barcodes. Although
familiarity of the EPC tag specifications is encouraged,
specific knowledge is not needed as EPC intricacies are
handled automatically. Loftware is an active member of the
EPCglobal community and will continue to refine our software
as new standards and specifications emerge.
Smart Label Support
Version 8.4 is our third release that supports Smart Label
RFID Printing. Companies with immediate needs based on
internal, retail, or DOD compliance mandates can start
producing and encoding RFID labels and go right into
production fairly quickly. The intuitive graphical user
interface and extensive documentation combine to accelerate
system design, even for those with limited knowledge of RFID
technology. Users can start from scratch or convert existing
bar code labels.
Reader Support
New for 8.4 is support for RFID reader hardware from Alien,
Symbol, AWID, and ThingMagic. This support comes in the form
of a .NET programming interface (API) which provides a
common language for the readers regardless of the hardware
and tags being used. We refer to this interface along with
all of its associated tools as the RFID Reader Module (RRM).
Common use cases for the RRM include Smart Label
Verification, Pallet Build, and Pallet Receive.
The RRM also comes with a powerful Reader Simulator. This
allows an implementation team to create, test, and
troubleshoot their reader solutions without recreating a
production environment. Development work can even begin
before deciding which RFID reader vendor to use. This could
knock weeks or even months off an implementation project.
