Intermec Wireless Networking Radios - ARDIS Network

ARDIS is a US wireless data radio frequency carrier that provides two way wireless private packet data transmission. ARDIS is a nation wide network and utilizes radio packet technology of the DataTAC network. DataTAC is a communications standard that provides an infrastructure for wireless data communications used in 9 countries (US, Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia). It transmits data through individual data packets and provides interactive real time communication. ARDIS has 400 metropolitan areas of the US, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

There are two different transmission rates available for ARDIS. The slower of the two uses a protocol called MDC4800 and has a data rate of 4.8 Kbps. The higher rate uses the RD-LAP protocol and operates at a data rate of 19.2 Kbps. The International DataTAC network carriers other than ARDIS operate only at a 4.8 Kbps data rate. ARDIS has been and continues to update its network from 4.8 Kbps to 19.2 Kbps. It has limited RD-LAP protocol availability in certain large metropolitan statistical areas (MSA's). The figure below is a graphic description of a Wireless Network. Mobile Systems has a full integration of internal radio support for an ARDIS solution. The mobile computers that utilize an ARDIS solution are the 6100, 6300 and 6600. The mobile computers that utilize an internal PCMCIA IBM solution (Wrigley) for the DataTAC network are the 6100, 6300 and 6600. All three computers and the 6210 have the option for an external IBM ARDIS radio modem.
