Here is How it Works
Loads applied anywhere on the loading surface generate (by
means of flexures) turning moments in the crank structures
which are located at each end of the scale base. These
turning moments are transmitted by the crank structures to
the ends of the "Floating Beam". Strain gages, bonded in
the exact center of the beam, respond to these moments,
producing a signal proportional to the sum of the turning
moments. Regardless of where a load is placed on the scale
platform, all weighing measurement takes place at the center
of the beam. Deflection of the weighing platform is only a
few thousandths of an inch at full load.
The unsurpassed performance of the "Floating Beam" scale
base is a direct result of the simplicity of the strain gage
measuring section. This section is superbly isolated with
respect to all other elements of the scale structure, hence
"floating".
GSE "Floating Beam" scales attain sensitivity,
repeatability and linearity well beyond the capability of
single point load cell, multi-load cell or vibrating wire
type load measuring devices. Every "Floating Beam" scale
base features on-center and off-center accuracies
unobtainable on conventional scales. GSE platforms typically
have 1 part in 10,000 linearity.
