Patient Safety Isn't The Only Benefit Of RFID In Healthcare

by Woody Myers 28. June 2011 09:58

A few weeks ago, we talked about how improved technology could improve patient safety.  This time we're going to focus on one aspect of modern technology that can benefit the healthcare industry: RFID, or Radio-Frequency IDentification.  Zebra recently suggested five advantages of RFID in healthcare including patient safety, tracking operating instruments/medical equipment, lab labeling, access control, & logistics.  For example, some facilities have found improved traceability of Biobank samples using RFID.  Another example of benefits of the technology is that RFID can go in writstbands, which is more convenient for both the end user and patient.

Bottom line: RFID can reduce medical errors, improve inventory management, prevent tampering, and more.

Don't think that upgrading is just for the big boys. It might be just as beneficial for smaller facilities to advance their technology and the financial damage might not be that large considering there's less equipment to overhaul.  Improving the data capture process can reduce healthcare costs which can make up your costs with improved ROI.
