Resetting The Intermec CN50

by Woody Myers 1. July 2010 09:26

The Intermec CN50 mobile computer is a reliable device.  But occassionally an application might lock up.  If you face a situation where the Intermec CN50 stops responding, you may need to perform more than a standard warm boot, or device restart.  First, try a "cold boot" which could restart the CN50 with minimal data loss.  Here's how:

Cached disk data may be lost during the reset but all other data is preserved.  If the cold boot does not work, you may need to perform a "clean boot" which will reset the device to factory settings.

This should be a last resort as this process erases the CN50's memory, applications, and data files in the object store.  The device is then restored to its "out of the box" state and you will have to reinstall your applications.

The Importance of Providing Ruggedized Equipment to Mobile Workers

by Woody Myers 18. January 2010 05:30

Sometimes you find out the hard way you may have underestimated what kind of tool you should get for a job.  You do research to try to match what’s out there with your needs and, more importantly, your budget.  Occasionally, sacrifices are made because there’s just not enough money to get every perk you’d like.  We recently had an email from just such a customer who underestimated their needs and paid dearly for it.

This particular customer made a large order (from a competitor) of consumer grade equipment.  He soon discovered his mobile employees were a lot rougher on the equipment than he anticipated.  About 35% of the non-ruggedized devices broke in the first 6 months.  The batteries drained too quickly and the workers had difficulty managing two separate devices instead of simply having a scanner with phone capabilities.  The software was confusing to his employees and connecting the Bluetooth scanner was problematic.  It was rapidly becoming apparent that the large order he placed was not right.  Unfortunately, he was now stuck with incompatible and broken equipment that wasn’t getting the job done.

Once the customer came to us, we were able to ensure he had exactly what he needed to meet all of the challenges.  We hooked him up with Intermec products since he was familiar with that quality brand and the Intermec CN50 could handle all aspects of the work.  We also ensured that the devices worked well inside of their pre-existing network and that the mobile workers could easily navigate the software.  Since he switched away from the consumer devices, the customer’s been pleased to report not one unit has broken.

You’re not saving money if you have to go back and pay more money to fix what you bought the first time.  To make sure you’ve considered every angle before you pull the trigger on your next big order, contact a RACO product specialist at 1-800-446-1991.

Fit to Screen missing from Internet Explorer on Intermec CK3

by Ben Warner 15. July 2009 10:42

If you have used an Intermec CK3 with WM6.1 you may notice that the Internet explorer (IE) works a little differently.  This applies to OS version 3.45.26.0031 and SSPB 6.20.33.0471.  There is a feature that is missing and has been an issue for at least one of our customers.  If you go into the menu on IE and then tap on view, you will notice the usual options have changed.  One that seems to be popular is the “Fit to Screen” option.  There is a registry key that can be edited to bring this feature back.

NOTE: edit the registry at your own risk.  You will need to use a mobile registry editor (you can find free ones on Google) and edit this registry key - HKLM\Security\Internet Explorer\MSHTML=0.  After you change this key to 0 the old view menu magically appears.

Track Roll-Off Box Containers - GPS Container Tracking

by Larry Sherman 13. November 2008 09:31

Our Client
A small Midwest container company has 100 roll-off box/ containers that are leased/rented and delivered to construction sites throughout their region.

The Pain
• Where are my containers?
• When are they coming back? Each container cost roughly 5K and I am not sure where ½ are at any one time. The Secondary Pain and addition desired ROI
• Can you help with Increasing asset utilization
• Can you help with Real Time Visibility
• Can you help me Lower Diesel / Fuel Cost by reducing deadheading
Deadheading=Traveling without a load back to home terminal

Whether due to personnel or lack of established business processes delivered equipment often get missed at check-out. Manual equipment check-in/check-out procedures are prone to errors and delays. Equipment is sometimes “lost” in the field due to not knowing where or who it was delivered to. An automated check-in/check-out procedure can significantly increase accuracy and prevent loss of equipment. Yet, not knowing where the items were sent to makes it difficult to hold customers accountable. Tracking of returnables starts not only with knowing how much inventory is in-house, but where it went, how long it’s been out, and when it returned.

The Cure
Z-Space’s Solution Pack Check-In/Check-Out with GPS tracking.

The new established business process uses an Intermec CN3 the smallest, most advanced, rugged mobile computer in the world, the CN3 with integrated GPS and Bluetooth increases efficiency and safety by enabling turn-by-turn navigation. With 3G WAN users are connected with high-speed data (GSM/EDGE or CDMA/EV-DO) anywhere they go.

Now the driver rolls off the container, scans the container number and we automatically capture the GPS coordinates and display them on a user consol back in the home office.
.
Now we are providing real time visibility to their assets, time and date stamping each transaction with the users ID. We now automatically start the lease/rental timer, when the timer goes off we change the status on the screen from green to red. This will notifying the consol operator of the need to schedule a return container job ticket. Now the console operator can coordinate the pickup with a container being dropped drop off., eliminating deadheading.

Bottom line the solution contained
• Z-Space Check in/Check out Multi-User Solution Pack
• 2 Intermec CN3 with accessories
• 2  T-Mobile Unlimited Data Only Plans
• Installation and Training

Intermec Smart Printers are just that

by Chris Francosky 13. November 2008 08:41

A great number of customers incorrectly assume that a barcode label printer must be connected to a dedicated desktop PC or corporate LAN in order to create and print labels.  The reality is, there are barcode label printers available that include built-in intelligence that allows an operator to produce labels without a PC or barcode label printing software.  These printers are called "Smart Printers."  Smart Printers accept user input from compatible keypads, scanners or mobile computers.  By eliminating the PC, companies can cut costs, save space and have the flexibility to deploy printers in environments that may not be suitable for typical desktop computers.  Most Smart Printers also support XML printing, a feature that allows organizations to quickly integrate the label printer with an existing corporate ERP system such as Oracle or SAP.  In the video presentation below, Jason Yoder introduces Intermec's Smart Printer functionality and demonstrates the technology:

Intermec offers several label printer models that include the Smart Printer feature, such as the PM4i and PX6i
