Patient safety is enhanced by ensuring the right medication is
given to the right patient at the right time and in the right dose.
This example shows how to access a centralized database to verify
that the medication about to be administered has been prescribed for
the patient. System verification is done at the server with no
patient data downloaded to the mobile device, helpful for meeting
HIPAA requirements.
Solution
Patients, caregivers and medications are identified with bar codes
or RFID tags. A database of patients and prescribed medication is
kept at the enterprise level. The caregiver administering medication
scans the patients ID bracelet and scans the medication to
positively verify the medication is prescribed for this patient. A
green circle on the display indicates a match in the patient
database. A red circle indicates the medication should not be given.
